The 3.5x Soviet PU scope, mounted here on an SVT40 semiautomatic sniping rifle. With its large and simple to operate range and windage drums it was a revolution in telescopic sight design and was soon copied by Germany. The rifles proved to be competent but not outstanding sniping weapons.

In 1940, the SVT38 was modified and re-introduced as the SVT40. The SVT40 used the short PU scope with a clever tuning-fork-shaped mounting bracket that slid into rails on the rear of the receiver. It proved to be a competent but not outstanding sniping rifle, with an effective range of about 650yds (600m). Its main virtue lay in its rapid-fire capability, as reported by sniper Vassili Zaitsev:
